SDNY COURTHOUSE,
April 5 – The Republic
of Turkey sued Christie's Inc.
to recover an ancient marble
statue, the "Anatolian Marble
Female Idol of Kiliya Type,"
a/k/a "The Guennol Stargazer,"
from 3000 to 2200
B.C.E.
On March 18, U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Judge Alison J. Nathan held a
final pre-trial conference.
Inner City Press covered
it.
The lawyer
for Turkey mentioned the time
difference, and asked if
things might be delayed be
interpretation.
The (bench) trial
kicked off on April 5. There
was talk of the Metropolitan
Museum of Art in 1993, the
Brooklyn Museum and a dispute
about hand-written notes on an
exhibit, and consecutive (not
simultaneous) interpretation
from Turkish.
Some
couldn't help
compare to
Turkey's
position on
Halkbank,
before SDNY
Judge Richard
M. Berman.
On the positive
side, the docket includes a
list of each side's exhibits,
something that is sometimes
evaded in the SDNY even in
criminal cases (see this
recent order by SDNY Judge Jed
Rakoff).
We'll have
more on this.
The case is
Republic of Turkey v.
Christie's Inc. et al.,
17-cv-3086 (Nathan)
