SDNY COURTHOUSE,
July 24 – Nzelo Okafor was
arrested in Las Vegas on June
29 on charges that he tried to
import two kilograms of heroin
from Afghanistan into the
United States. The indictment
was in the U.S. District Court
for the Southern District of
New York.
On July 1 a
U.S. Magistrate Judge in the
District of Nevada, Daniel J.
Albregts, ordered Okafor
released. The US Attorney's
Office got SDNY Judge Andrew
L. Carter to stay it. And on
July 24, SDNY Judge Lewis A.
Kaplan to whom the case has
been assigned extended
Akafor's
detention.
Akofor's CJA
lawyer Xavier Donaldson did
his best to free his client.
He said that Okafor runs a
used car dealership and more
in California, and that the
allegation were that Akafor
was trying only for a sample,
not two
kilos.
Judge Kaplan was
having none of it, calling the
government's argument strong,
at least at this point. He
ordered Okafor detained
pending trial, for which there
is no date. The next
conference is October 7.
Co-defendant Uzoma Bonaventure
Dire remains at least.
This case is US
v. Okafor, 20-cr-373 (Kaplan)
