Mykel Mays Sold Crack But Gets Time Serve Wants To Be Hairdresser Amid Coronavirus Unclear

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon
BBC - Guardian UK - Honduras - The Source

SDNY COURTHOUSE, April 27 – Mykel Mays was arrested for selling crack on Manhattan's Upper West Side and she made post-arrest statements about what has become known as her Drug Trafficking Organization.

On April 27 in a proceeding covered by Inner City Press, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Andrew L. Carter began her sentencing proceeding by ordering sealed the statements she made when arrested, so they are not in the public record.

The defense lawyer's sentencing submission, originally filed with the late Judge Deborah A. Batts (Rest In Peace), is not in the public docket - none of it.

Judge Carter said it should be refiled with "appropriate redactions." But that will be long after the now-concluded sentencing.    Judge Carter began, before arguments, by saying he was leaning toward time served.

The AUSA said, yes, the Office is recommending a below guidelines sentence, adding for the record that the defendant's DTO sold crack on West 107-110 Street.

Near the end of the proceeding the defendant spoke movingly for herself, about how horrible it has been in the MCC prison during this time. She said when released she wants to open a hair salon. Despite re-openings in other states, in New York it is unclear when these can be re-opened.

Judge Carter issued the time served sentence. Clip clip. The case is US v. Mays, 18-cr-657 (Carter).
