SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Nov 27 – Kyle Weiland sold
thousands of Xanax pills using
the Dark Web. When caught, he
said his motivation was the
overdose deaths of fraternity
brothers at the University of
Miami. On December 5 he asked
on this basis for a sentence
of Time Served - in this case,
one day of imprisonment.
The
sentencing took place in
cavernous Courtroom 110 of the
U.S. District Court for the
Southern District of New York.
As noted, with the elevators
out of service, Judge Lorna G.
Schofield moved the proceeding
down to the ground floor of 40
Foley Square. In the courtroom
were six of Weiland's family
members, and Inner City Press.
Reviewing Weiland's sentencing
submission, Inner City Press
found that much of it was
redacted. For example, after a
sentence ending with Weiland
"agreeing to forfeiture
allegations," an entire
paragraph is redacted. Even
the page numbers 3 and 4 are
redacted. It is not clear who
approves, or approved, these
redactions.
Judge Schofield to her credit
in a courthouse where drug
sellers for example from The
Bronx are routinely given
multi-year sentences said that
one day was not enough, and
sentenced Weiland to six
months in prison and six month
of home confinement during
which time he can leave to
work. The case is US v.
Weiland, 18-cr-273
(Schofield).
