SDNY COURTHOUSE,
May 24 – Joseph Jean-Louis
while on Supervised Release
was convicted of two robberies
in New York.
On May 24, U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Judge Ronnie Abrams held a
VOSR sentencing proceeding.
Inner City Press covered
it.
The
Assistant US Attorney
recommended a below guidelines
sentence, which is rare,
mentioning 24 months and the
ability to designate him to a
medical facility.
The Federal
Defender spoke of mental
issues and community based
treatment.
Mr.
Jean-Louis spoke for himself,
cogently, saying I am very
sorry for what I did, it was
stupid, I will regret it the
rest of my life. He mentioned
that he was a veteran.
Judge Abrams
wondered whether a half-way
house or residential re-entry
center could provided the
needed services.
At the end
Judge Abrams said, There are
mitigating circumstances,
including mental health, and
no one got hurt. Mr.
Jean-Louis served his country,
and got a serious sentence for
the bank robbery. There is a
different interest in the
violation of supervised
release, and there may be
danger to the community. I'm
going to sentence him to below
guidelines, but not time
served. Instead, one year and
one day, partially concurrent
with the state sentence. And
three years of supervised
release.
The case is US v.
Jean-Louis, 19-cr-858 (Abrams)
