SDNY COURTHOUSE,
April 14 – A defendant now in
El Paso was arraigned in
absentia on the
telephone on April 14 before
U.S. District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Judge Edgardo Ramos. Inner
City Press was on the
line.
Assistant US
Attorney Jarrod L. Schaeffer
said that Fernando Rafael Ruiz
is charged with money
landering for an online
narcotics
conspiracy. Judge
Ramos sensibly asked, What
narcotic?
Oxycodone, was the answer.
But Ruiz was not
on the phone. Therefore he
could not consent to the
exclusion of Speedy Trial Act
time until the next conference
on May 27 at 2:30. (It was
going to be at 10:30 am but
Schaeffer said he has a
sentencing then).
A filing is expected, with
Ruiz' belated presence and
consent. The case is US v.
Ruiz, 20-cr-185 (Ramos).
