On
Cameroon Inner City Press Asks
Small Arms Survey About Biya's
Disarmament, Lax UN
By Matthew
Russell Lee
UNITED NATIONS,
June 18 – At the UN when the
Small Arms Survey reports were
presented with an hour and a
half embargo on June 18, Inner
City Press asked about
Cameroon's government attempt
to strip Anglophones even of
old hunting rifles, while
nevertheless burning down
whole villages in the
Anglophone South-West and
North-West regions. Small Arms
Survey's Eric Berman politely
responded that while he had
been at conference on
the topic in Yaounde this
month it was about regional
issues, not Cameroon specific.
Afterward Inner
City Press asked him, for
example, about the refoulement
of 47 Anglophones by Nigeria
to Cameroon (and sent him at
his request information about
this). The largest question
remains: what about repressive
governments, and those like
Paul Biya in power for
decades, trying to strip their
citizens of weapons?
On the
other hand, Inner City Press
asked about France's air-drop
of weapons into Libya, and
about who is arming the
forces, said to be
mercenaries, assaulting
Hodeidah in Yemen? This was
not answered.
On the UN's lax
handling of weapons and
ammunition - Glocks “lost” in
Iraq, ammo in backpacks in
Central African Republic - the
panelists said they work with
the UN and African Union.
Earlier this year in the UN's
1B basement, automatic weapons
were being advertised until
Inner City Press exposed it
with live stream Periscope,
now under attack. We'll have
more on this.
