On
Syria, UN
Agencies &
NGOs Urge
Public
Involvement,
FUNCA Notes
By Matthew
Russell Lee
UNITED
NATIONS,
January 21 --
Four days
before Syria
talks that may
or may not
happen, at
that time or
at all, on
January 21 a
large group of
UN officials
and heads of
NGOs issued a
joint
statement on
Syria,
including:
“the
war is
approaching
its sixth
brutal year.
The bloodshed
continues. The
suffering
deepens. So
today, we –
leaders of
humanitarian
organizations
and UN
agencies -
appeal not
only to
governments
but to each of
you - citizens
around the
world – to add
your voices in
urging an end
to the
carnage. To
urge that all
parties reach
agreement on a
ceasefire and
a path to
peace. More
than ever
before, the
world needs to
hear a
collective
public voice
calling for an
end to this
outrage.
Because this
conflict and
its
consequences
touch us
all."
Signatories'
list below.
Back on
January 13
when the
International
Committee of
the Red Cross'
Dominik
Stillhart
comes to speak
about Syria,
instead of
doing so in
the UN Press
Briefing Room
which is
UNused due to
deference to
Ban, it will
instead be in
the clubhouse
of UNCA, the
UN Corruption
Association, a
group which
last month sold
seats with Ban
Ki-moon for
$6,000.
Why
didn't ICRC
simply ask any
UN member
state to book
the UN Press
Briefing Room
for
them?
(Notably, the
cancellation
of open noon
briefings and
shrinking of
access under
Ban have not
been protested
by UNCA, a/k/a
the UN's
Censorship
Alliance which
has tried to
get
investigative
media thrown
out of the UN,
including in
connection
with reporting
on siege and
yes,
starvation, in
Sri Lanka.
UNCA's
self-promotional
"offer" of
ICRC's
Stillhart was
send only to
those who pay
UNCA money.)
UNCA
was used in
December to
promote the
campaign for a
Security
Council seat
by Italy.
Italy's “in”
was that not
only is one
Giampaolo
Pioli, without
any term
limits, still
head of UNCA:
he now has his
former
protege, now
with ANSA, as
a Vice
President.
This is the
same Pioli who
tried to get
the
investigative
Press thrown
out for
reporting on
his favor
to the Sri
Lankan
ambassador who
rented one of
Pioli's
apartments
-- Sri Lanka,
a major
failure of
these UN agencies
and most NGOs.
