On Togo UN Guterres No Comment on 50 Year Rule Nor Cut Of Internet As Inner City Press Asked

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon
BBC - Guardian UK - Honduras - CJR - PFT

UN GATE / SDNY COURT, Feb 23 – As Togo, a country ruled by the same family for 50 years, headed into "elections" on February 21 Inner City Press asked UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to his comments on the theft of election, and Internet cut-off, which had already begun.

Guterres, even then on his way to this real home in Lisbon in a publicly funded junket, provide and has made no comment.

His spokespeople Stephane Dujarric and Melissa Flement, who have banned Inner City Press from the UN for 600 days, also provided no answers to this question emailed to them on the morning of February 21: "February 21-1: On Togo, what are the comments and actions if any of SG Guterres that in the family ruled country voter will head to the polls on Saturday to choose their next president.  Incumbent Faure Gnassingbé will face six rivals, including long-time opposition leader Jean-Pierre Fabre.  Members of the diaspora are supposedly allowed to cast their ballots for the first time, although only 300 were able to register.  Mr Gnassingbé of the ruling Union for the Republic is running for a fourth term.  Constitutional changes were jammed through last year allowing him to seek re-election - an issue which sparked huge protests. His family has ruled the country for over half a century."

Now from Lome, this: The home of a key Togo opposition candidate was surrounded by security forces for a number of hours after polls closed in elections widely expected to see President Faure Gnassingbe claim a fourth term in power.  large contingent of security forces had blocked all access to the property in the capital Lome. The government had also confirmed the move...  Observers removed -  This week, 500 local observers lost their accreditation, accused of interfering in the electoral process, and the system of electronic security of the results was cancelled at the last moment by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

We'll have more on this, and on Guterres' corruption and censorship.
