UN GATE, June 22–
Elections are in full swing at
the UN Staff Union in New
York, just after the ghoulish
one-man "re-election" of
Antonio Guterres as Secretary
General with at least seven
opposition candidates blocked.
A fish rots from the head.
In this
fish's UNion the outgoing
First Vice President, who
pleased Team Guterres so much
that Guterres re-gifted him a
prize, is now running for
President.
However, his
hopes were dashed last week
when the arbitration
commission disqualified him as
he had reached his term
limits, a point he presumably
thought no-one would
notice. Not wishing to
take no for an answer he has
convened an emergency general
meeting on Jun 22 to get, half
way through the elections, to
immediately lift term limits
so his candidacy can be
reinstated.
Many staff have
complained and other
candidates have cried foul.
Some have questioned the
ethical propriety of changing
rules halfway through the
game, especially as some unit
positions have already been
elected.
Some have also
questioned how he was able to
convene the emergency meeting
given that the 300 required
signatures (or emails in times
of Covid) have yet to be
produced. But with a
pliant council chair running
the meeting, as it convened in
the UN Inner City Press is
banned from by Guterres for
the 1086th day, he seemed
poised to get his way.
Then, unlike the
scam re-election of Guterres
that went through, this
override of term limits is
said to have been voted down.
Management has
too much to lose if his rivals
get in. And this is not the
first time he has ridden
roughshod over the rules.
Watch this space - and keep
the info coming, including
responses. Unlike the UN of
Guterres and Melissa Fleming,
Inner City Press believes in
free speech.
