In UN Game of Thrones One Stone But Two Birds In The New Rules For UN Games

UN GATE / SDNY, March 29 -- Although conferences and projects are put on hold due to the severe COVID-19 pandemic, UN Department of Peace Operations (DPO) released a P-3 temporary position on 24 March 2020.

The recruiting will be extraordinary.

Despite that it’s only a temporary vacancy, it reflects the delicate change in the global political landscape and the nuance deserves to be savored.   The position is created for candidates from East Asia, who have degrees from top universities, socializing talents and support from their governments, which have shared interests and concerns. These governments feel they haven’t been rewarded by their substantial investment in peacekeeping, to their disappointment. They are still significantly underrepresented in DPO and their numerous attempts for positions have met setback.

One of the candidates used to be confident that he was so close to success, yet the recruiting branch reneged and would not let him get into the first round of test.  Will he be blessed by the Goddess of Chance this time? Their French language skills might constitute the biggest barrier in the endeavor.

The key player in this tremendous maneuver is not from Asia. He comes from a country with the heritage of business and free trade, which has connected it with the Oriental land for centuries, be it Shogunate or Meiji era. The spirit of free trade in ingrained in his genes. He is multilingual, well-informed, well connected both in UN and EU, which made him smelled danger from early on:  the global order is falling apart.   He signaled time and time again but got ignored.  After a series of twists and turns, like the expedition leading to the discovery of  Barents Sea, he eventually built trust with ‘them’. He is a marvelous negotiator, striving for the win-win solution with his flexibility and creativity.

Some senior UN officers has acted as messengers and liaison persons, exchanging information. Important meetings were arranged in locations far away from New York.  One of the 'couriers' has a flexible working schedule, thanks to the kindness of the team leader. Furthermore, the team leader is naturally bonded to DPO and is willing to bridge the communication.

East Asians in DPO, although its number is extremely limited, have also conducted hard coordination.   This is a mere epitome of the joint efforts by peace lovers from the East and the West. The cooperation will go beyond the security field. In times of disorder, they need to stick together against fragility, of course, in alignment with UN strategy for 2020.  Stay tuned.
