UN GATE, July 6 –
Chinese state media, given
large offices and access in
the UN of Antonio Guterres,
was on February 18 officially
deemed by the US State
Department as arms of the
Chinese government, subject to
the Foreign Missions Act. On
June 22, more listings, see
below.
Now on
July 6, from US State
Department Mike Pompeo, while
Guterres keeps taking Chinese
funds and covering up abuses,
this: "The Chinese Communist
Party’s destruction of free
Hong Kong continues. With the
ink barely dry on the
repressive National Security
Law, local authorities – in an
Orwellian move – have now
established a central
government national security
office, started removing books
critical of the CCP from
library shelves, banned
political slogans, and are now
requiring schools to enforce
censorship. Until now,
Hong Kong flourished because
it allowed free thinking and
free speech, under an
independent rule of law. No
more. The United States
condemns Beijing’s repeated
failure to live up to its
obligations under the
Sino-British Joint
Declaration, and these latest
assaults on the rights and
freedoms of the people of Hong
Kong." And from Guterres? The
sucking sound of corruption.
While
groups like RSF and CPJ jumped
to the defense of Chinese
state media, they have done
nothing about the ouster from
the UN of Inner City Press,
which was today June 22
bragged about Sri Lanka's
former ambassador to the UN
Palitha Kohona. He wrote
in Asian Tribute that he used
"respected" journalists at the
UN Correspondents Association,
which RSF and CPJ partner with
and on whose Executive
Committee Xinhua has a
permanent seat, to get Inner
City Press ousted after it
undermined Antonio Guterres.
Now what will RSF and CPJ do
about this?
From DC: "Over
the past decade and
particularly under General
Secretary Xi Jinping’s tenure,
the CCP has reorganized
China’s state propaganda
outlets disguised as news
agencies and asserted even
more direct control over them.
He has stated “Party-owned
media must. . . embody the
party’s will, safeguard the
party’s authority … their
actions must be highly
consistent with the party.” In
short, while Western media are
beholden to the truth, PRC
media are beholden to the
Chinese Communist Party.
Pursuant to authorities under
the Foreign Missions Act, the
State Department is issuing
today a new determination that
designates the U.S. operations
of China Central Television,
China News Service, the
People’s Daily, and the Global
Times as foreign
missions. This follows
on the February 18 designation
of Xinhua News Agency, China
Global Television Network,
China Radio International,
China Daily Distribution
Corporation, and Hai Tian
Development USA. These
nine entities all meet the
definition of a foreign
mission under the Foreign
Missions Act, which is to say
that they are “substantially
owned or effectively
controlled” by a foreign
government. In this
case, they are effectively
controlled by the government
of the People’s Republic of
China. The decision to
designate these entities is
not based on any content
produced by these entities,
nor does it place any
restrictions on what the
designated entities may
publish in the United
States. It simply
recognizes them for what they
are. Entities designated
as foreign missions must
adhere to certain
administrative requirements
that also apply to foreign
embassies and consulates in
the United States. This
designation recognizes PRC
propaganda outlets as foreign
missions and increases
transparency relating to the
CCP and PRC government’s media
activities in the United
States. "
Covered in this
first move are UN dominators,
with permanent veto-wielding
representation on the board of
the UN Correspondents
Association, are Xinhua News
Agency, China Radio
International, China Global
Television Network and the
distributors of China Daily
and People’s Daily.
While the
UN of Guterres and his head of
media accreditation Melissa
Fleming gives these entities
office and unlimited questions
at the dying noon briefing,
they roughed
up and ban Inner City
Press which asks about it and
Guterres'
links to and cover ups
for China state UN briber CEFC
China Energy.
Now,
tellingly, "Reporters Without
Borders" known by its French
acronym RSF, which never did
anything about UN Sec-Gen
Antonio Guterres having Inner
City Press roughed up and
banned, now 609 days - has
come to the support of Xinhua,
a state media which pronounces
that mass incarceration in
Xinjiang of the Uighurs is
fine: "Reporters Without
Borders (RSF) calls
on the State Department to
immediately rescind a
personnel cap placed on five
Chinese state media outlets
operating in the United
States."
So RSF has
not problem with the UN
physically throwing out the
independent Press, but chimes
in for Chinese state
propaganda. They have lost
their way somewhere - we'll
have more on this.
Note:
before Inner City Press quit
UNCA then was thrown out of
the UN, it was on UNCA's
board. When it raised the
issue of the UN's ban on any
Taiwanese journalist even
entering the UN, the Xinhua
veto-wielding member on UNCA
board warned it stop raising
the issue or it would be
thrown out. As it was. And
RSF?
Here are UNCA
members from those groups, all
information from UNCA's
publicly available website -
other dictator media favored
by Guterres while he bans
Inner City Press will be
profiled as this series
progresses. Xinhua has no
fewer that TEN people who are
members of UNCA, in huge
offices:
