CENTRE STREET,
Oct 27 – Call it a tale of two
cases: a woman charged with
criminal mischief /
intentional damaging of
property appeared with her
counsel Ronald Kuby before NYS
Judge Valentina M. Morales via
Microsoft Teams on October 27.
Inner City Press was there -
in the courtroom.
The case
was winding down, with Kuby
reporting that his client is
establishing a new life out of
state. An online fundraiser
for his client Danielle Mayahi
hearkens back to a
demonstration against the New
York Times for its coverage of
Gaza and various health
conditions said to result from
NYPD treatment.
A previous plea
or disposition offer was said
to be rejected for the
government's failure to
disclose the informant. Now,
it seems, it's all water under
the bridge - and the case
below, with another high
profile defense lawyer, almost
but not yet completely over:
In
November 2023 two women were
charged with assault as a hate
crime for ripping a Star of
David off of a 41-year-old
woman on West 82nd Street
after tearing down fliers
about hostages taken in the
October 7 attack in Israel.
NYC tabloids
covered their first appearance
in court. Quotes were
reported: "They are not
victims, they are A.I
generated. I love Palestine,"
then "F**k Israel, f**k your
white privilege."
Jump
cut to August 27, 2025 when
the pair appeared in 100
Centre Street, TAP A. Inner
City Press was there, along
with four observers, no other
media. So it live
tweeted:
OK - now at NYS
case for "assault as a hate
crime" on the Upper West Side
of Manhattan, Oct 7 fliers -
People v. Mehwish Omer and
Stephanie Gonzalez.
Judge: What is
the offer of the People?
ADA: Assault 3 as
a hate crime - if they
complete the bias program and
remain arrest free for a year,
time served.
Judge: It is
being accepted today? Counsel:
No. Judge: So, I'll set a
trial date, October 14.
Ms. Omer and
Gonzalez, if you deliberately
fail to appear, the case will
continue. Do you understand,
Ms. Omer?
Yes. Yes.
Judge: Parole
will be continued
