24 to Life For Drunk Driver Who Killed 4 on LES Then Victims Families Speak on Centre St

by Matthew & Russell Lee, Patreon Substack

100 CENTRE STREET, Jan 16 – A drunk driving incident which killed four people on the Lower East Side on the 4th of July 2024 was dissected in a bench trial on October 20 before Justice April A. Newbauer. Inner City Press was there - as were dozens of LES residents, many of them present at the time of the crash.

As a female witness testified, the narrative turned to a man who had tried to pull the obviously drunk Daniel Hyden out of his still-running pickup truck.

A man in the gallery raised his hand - like, that was me! - but was told to take his hand down by court security.

Justice Newbauer heard argument on whether Hyden's memoir of being a drunk driver turned substance abuse counselor can come into the evidence before her. The prosecutor promised to come forward with a witness to authenticate the memoir.

Jump cut to November 3, Inner City Press live tweeted the verdict, here:

Justice Newbauer: As to count 1, murder in the second degree, I find the defendant guilty. Count 2, guilty. Count 3, guilty. Court 4, guilty. Court 5 for aggravated - guilty. Counts 6 to 12 - all guilty. Guilty on all charges. The verdict stands recorded. Defense, will you be filing a motion? Defense: Not at this time. Justice: Remand to jail is continued. We need a sentencing date, not a Thursday... December 3d..

Then: out in the hallway of the 13th floor of 100 Centre Street, Manhattan DA is shaking hands with family members of the four deceased, and other LES residents...

Jump cut to January 16, when Hyden was up for sentencing. After victim impact statements he was sentenced to 24 years to life.

Afterward down on frigid Centre Street family members of the victims stayed as long as anyone would interview them, some wearing T-shirts featuring their dead loved ones' faces, keeping memories alive.
