At Bench Trial of Drunk Driver Who Killed 4 on LES Man Who Tried to Help Raises Hand

by Matthew & Russell Lee, Patreon Substack

100 CENTRE STREET, Oct 20 – A drunk driving incident which killed four people on the Lower East Side on the 4th of July 2024 was dissected in a bench trial on October 20 before Justice April A. Newbauer. Inner City Press was there - as were dozens of LES residents, many of them present at the time of the crash.

As a female witness testified, the narrative turned to a man who had tried to pull the obviously drunk Daniel Hyden out of his still-running pickup truck.

A man in the gallery raised his hand - like, that was me! - but was told to take his hand down by court security.

Justice Newbauer heard argument on whether Hyden's memoir of being a drunk driver turned substance abuse counselor can come into the evidence before her. The prosecutor promised to come forward with a witness to authenticate the memoir.
