COURTHOUSE,
Nov 3– A man charged with
shaking his girlfriend's baby,
causing his death of a brain
injury, is on trial before
Justice Juan M. Merchan.
On October 30,
Inner City Press was there,
the courtroom gallery once
full for the Trump trial now
entirely empty.
The police
officer who responded to
defendant David Patrick's
9-1-1 call said he saw no
bruises on the baby, and tried
to administer CPR.
On cross
examination, the defense
lawyer asked if the officer
had ever before done CPR on a
baby.
No, was the
answer. But Patrick is charged
with depraved indifference
murder.
On November 3, an
ambulance worker was on the
stand speaking of giving
compressions. The defense on
cross examination again
implied that lack of
experience was partially the
cause of death.
After the jury
left until Thursday, the ADA
said the defense over the
weekend sought a plea deal for
criminally negligent homicide
but the DA's Office turned it
down, saying only first degree
manslaughter and 20 years
would suffice. So the trial,
with high stakes, will
continue.
