CENTRE STREET,
Nov 10 – A homeless man who
beat another in a plaza near
Times Square on October 4,
2023 is on trial for attempted
murder in 100 Centre Street.
On November 10, he was on the
witness stand. Inner City
Press was there.
The ADA
asked him how it was
self-defense, if the victim
was on the ground. It was a
fight, the defendant said,
then spoke about having wanted
to see his wife.
Justice Robert M. Mandelbaum
asked, Did anyone ask you
about your wife? No? Then just
answer the questions.
The ADA
pointed out that there were
tissues on the witness stand,
too. Thank you, the defendant
said. A video of the beating,
shot from a distance, was
shown to the jurors, few of
whom seemed to be looking at
the defendant.
On
re-direct, the defense lawyer
asked his client about being
off his
medications.
"Beyond the scope of the cross
examination," the ADA
objected. The judge
agreed.
The trial
continues.
