COURTHOUSE,
Dec 10 – A man who had
been imprisoned on Rikers
Island following an arrest for
stealing Amazon packages has
progressively lost the ability
to speak.
On
Wednesday his Legal Aid lawyer
described for Justice Ann D.
Thompson the effects of his
client's stroke: aphasia,
seizures and the danger of
permanent loss of
language.
The
prosecutor said that
nevertheless he should remain
detained, that even if he
can't speak, he can still
steal.
Justice
Thompson told the defendant
that she would take a chance
and release him to the
facility in Harlem his
attorney had arranged for him.
If you get so much as a B
misdemeanor, she said, I will
put you back in jail.
"Yes sir,"
the defendant said. One court
officer said there was a
detainer, and the ending also
lost its clarity.
