CENTRE ST,
Jan 5 – More that three years
after being charged with
attempted murder and assault
as a hate crime for yelling
anti-Muslim slurs while
slashing a woman, then a Good
Samaritan who intervened,
Albert Cowan was up for
sentencing on January 5. Inner
City Press was
there.
A week
after the double slashing, and
after Cowan was arrested in
connection with a burglary
then linked back to the
slashings, Scarsdale art
teacher John Catania was given
an award in City Hall. He
described events at the L
train subway stop under Union
Square, and his role.
Other speakers
included Taher Abdelhadi of
the Muslim Society of New York
and Yvette Sylla of Masjid
Al-Taqwa.
On January
5, Justice Curtis J. Farber
imposed an agreed upon overall
sentence of 11 and a half
years, with the hate crime
charge folded in. No other
media were there. The beat
goes on.
