Pregnant Woman Charged with Fake Marriage Was Detained in SDNY Now Gets Time Served

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Sept 13 – Jessica Perez was charged with trying to become a US citizen via a false marriage in Queens, New York, in August 2018.

On October 17, 2023 she was before U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge James L. Cott. Inner City Pres was there, the only media in the SDNY Mag Court. At the end, it was asked to leave.

But first, Judge Cott said that he had rebuffed a request by the Assistant US Attorney to make an ex parte presentation.

It is unclear of what it would then have consisted: Perez was being ordered detained, with her earrings to be removed or cut off in the MDC. The indictment lists an a/k/a: Jessica Bedoya Cifuentes.

As she was led out she said "amor" to a man in the gallery. She is pregnant.

Then the same AUSA came back into the courtroom. Inner City Press followed. Judge Cott said, this is an ex parte proceeding like I would hold in my chambers.

Inner City Press asked, Is it being recorded, so that will be a transcript? Judge Cott said politely that he didn't know.

Jump cut to May 31, 2024 - Jessica Perez pled guilty: "Minute Entry for proceedings held before Judge Vernon S. Broderick:Change of Plea Hearing as to Jessica Perez held on 5/31/2024. Defendant Jessica Perez, present with Retained Counsel. Defendant pleaded Guilty to Count Two of the S1 Indictment. The sentencing is scheduled for September 11, 2024. Defendant's request to remove the GPS is denied, she is to continue with GPS monitoring

On August 29, Perez's lawyer filed asking for time served or, in the alternative, one year of supervised release.

On September 3 the US Attorney's Office wrote in asking for zero to six months.

On September 11, she was sentenced to time served, three years of supervised release.

 US v. Perez, 23-cr-525 (Broderick / Cott)
