SDNY
COURTHOUSE,
July 22 – A man charged in a
drugs and gun case with
immigration consequences was
appointed a second Criminal
Justice Act lawyer on July 22.
It happened
before U.S. District Court for
the Southern District of New
York Magistrate Judge Valerie
Figueredo. Inner City Press
was there, the only media in
the SDNY Mag Court.
The
defendant, not in custody,
appeared with his existing CJA
lawyer, and with the CJA duty
attorney. It was requested
that the former stay on. Judge
Figueredo asked if she can
assign two CJA lawyers to one
defendant.
The CJA of
the day said yes, if a case in
complex. He said this one was,
due to possible immigration
consequences.
The request
was granted. A July 30
conference before the District
Judge was adjourned sine die.
The
overall case is US v. Colon,
et al., 23-cr-472 (Torres /
Figueredo)
