Darden Conned NBA Dwight Howard on Buying WNBA Dream Now Bail Conditions Qs

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Oct 11– Calvin Darden Jr. is on trial for defrauding NBA player Dwight Howard to convince him he was buying the WNBA team the Atlanta Dream. Inner City Press is covering the trial. September 30 thread:

AUSA: Did you ever meet directly with Calvin Darden?

Witness Schmidt: No, but those are my text messages about sales agreements under 10 (b) 5 (1), and Calvin Darden's Fidelity statement

AUSA: What is this?

Schmidt: A Wells Fargo statement labeled Calvin Darden.

AUSA: Did Dwight Howard pursue the investment?

Schmidt: Yes, this is the wire transfer of my client Dwight David Howard II for the marketing company related to the WNBA's Atlanta Dream

AUSA: Was Mr. Howard's line of credit increased to $10 million?

Schmidt: Yes. Here he wired to Legacy AC LLC to try to close on the purchase of the Atlanta Dream. But we learned Dwight could not own the Dream while an active NBA player - so he was to be a creditor.

Then, the conviction of CALVIN DARDEN, JR. for his role in defrauding former National Basketball Association players Dwight Howard and Chandler Parsons out of $8 million.  The defendant was found guilty following an 11-day jury trial before U.S. District Judge Vernon S. Broderick.

On October 10, Judge Broderick docketed this: "ORDER as to (23-Cr-134-4) Calvin Darden, Jr. I am in receipt of the Defendant's letter requesting certain modifications to his bail conditions. (Doc. 217.) It is hereby ORDERED that Defendant shall file a letter on or before Friday, October 11, 2024 which addresses the following questions: 1. Defendant requests that I modify the list of approved persons with whom Darden may communicate to include Caleb Darden. (Id. Paragraph 6.) Although Defendant's letter indicates that Caleb Darden is his stepson, based on information from Defendant's prior case, my understanding is that Caleb Darden is Defendant's son. Please clarify the relationship between Defendant and Caleb Darden. 2. Defendant requests that I permit him to drive his daughter to and from school. (Id. Paragraph 5.) Please explain whether Defendant would routinely drive his daughter to and from school prior to the Defendant's conviction in this case. 3. Defendant requests that I permit him to use internet connected Apps to control various appliances and electronics within his home. (Id. Paragraph 3.) Please explain whether such appliances and electronics are accessible and controllable through other means, and whether this request is a matter of convenience or necessity. SO ORDERED. (Signed by Judge Vernon S. Broderick on 10/10/2024)."

The case is USA v. Cohen, et al., 1:23-cr-134 (Broderick)
