SDNY
COURTHOUSE,
July 19 – A man many times
before arrested was indicted
for using a stolen Arrow key
to steal mail out of a mail
box on 79th Street and Madison
Avenue in Manhattan on June
26, 2023.
On July
19, 2024 he was up for
sentencing before U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Judge Valerie E. Caproni.
Inner City Press was there,
the only media - and only
person - in the courtroom
gallery.
His lawyer, with
her client's permission or at
least foreknowledge, called
the crime "pathetic." He had
been paid $10 to take mail out
of the box, and now was in the
MDC jail for it. He did not
want to go back.
When
he spoke, he said he wanted to
start anew, and thanked his
lawyer, by name: Lisa Scolari.
She said she would try to get
him a cell phone, since the
prosecutors said they could
not return it. Judge Caproni
noted that the SDNY Court
works to get committed lawyers
on its CJA panel.
He was sentenced
to three more weeks in the MDC
while a residential drug
treatment bed is sought.
Or perhaps,
faster, a one money detox in
Cornerstone. It it not clear
if the future developments
will be in the docket. But it
was worth reporting.
The case is US v.
Yancey, 24-cr-344 (Caproni)
