Bronx Man with Jamaican Passport Pled Guilty to Sweepstakes Fraud US Gets 18 Months

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Oct 20 – Donald Dillion is charged with defrauding people by convincing them they won sweepstakes, only to charge them fees and taxes.

While based in The Bronx, he used a Wyoming corporation named DD Metro.

On February 5, 2024 Dillion was presented in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrates Court. Inner City Press was there, the only media in the SDNY Mag Court.

The AUSA had agreed that Dillion, stopped in JFK airport with his US and Jamaican passports, could be released on $200,000 unsecured bond, that day.

On March 6, Dillion's case was indicted and assigned to District Judge John P. Cronan.

On March 11, Judge Cronon arraigned Dillion. Inner City Press was there. Dillion pleaded not guilty.

On October 22 the Federal Defenders wrote in asking for a change of plea proceeding - to guilty.

It happened on November 26, with sentencing set for March 5, 2025.

But on July 25, the Federal Defenders wrote in asking to extend the already extended August 22 sentencing, to the week of October 6, saying they are "awaiting a few final documents that are relevant to Mr. Dillion's mitigation arguments and which are coming from overseas."

On September 25 the Federal Defenders wrote in asking for a non-incarceratory sentence, five years probation with the first six months to be spend on home confinement.

On October 2, the US Attorney's Office wrote in asking for 18 months.

Belatedly docketed, Dillion was sentenced to 18 months.

The case is USA v. Dillion, 1:24-cr-132 (Cronan)
