SDNY
COURTHOUSE,
Nov 21 – A young man from
Mauritania, formerly an
Unaccompanied Alien Child, has
been detained in 26 Federal
Plaza by ICE. On
November 10 he filed a habeas
corpus petition in the U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of New York,
where Inner City Press found
it.
His
Brooklyn-based lawyer has
asked that he be immediately
released from custody, or get
an individualized custody
re-determination and be sent
to the "least restrictive
setting."
The case
was assigned to District
Judge P. Kevin Castel, who set
a December 4 hearing and a
briefing schedule before.
On November 21
the US Attorney's Office wrote
in that "petitioner was over
18 at the time he was
detained," arguing that his
detention in the Orange County
Jail in Goshen, NY is legal.
The case
is Maazouz v. Almodovar, et
al., 1:25-cv-9388 (Castel)
