For Armed Robbery of East Harlem Store Callender Had Bail Reversed Now Pleads Guilty

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Sept 25 – Saquan Callender and Cordell Ballenger were arrested and charged with the August 18 gunpoint robbery of a convenience store on E. 116 Street in East Harlem.

The two were in the same Complaint, but they ended up being separately indicted and their cases assigned to different District Judges.

Callendar was initially ordered released on $20,000 bond in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrates Court, which Inner City Press covers, often the only media there. That order was reversed in Part 1.

On October 11 Callender was formally indicted and his case wheeled out to new District Judge Dale E. Ho, seemingly his first case, at least criminal case, in SDNY.

On August 14, Cordell Ballenger in his now separate case pled guilty. Inner City Press was there, and will be reporting on both (linked) cases.

On September 19, Judge Ho docketed: "ORDER as to Saquan Callender. The Court has been advised that the Defendant may want to enter a change of plea"

And he did plead guilty, before Magistrate Judge Parker, on September 25: "before Magistrate Judge Katharine H. Parker: Change of Plea Hearing as to Saquan Callender held on 9/25/2024. Defendant appeared in courtroom 5A with Attorney Sylvie Levine. A.U.S.A. Meredith Foster present for the Government. Defendant pled guilty to Count Two & Three of the Indictment. Judge Parker recommends that DJ Ho accept the guilty plea. Defendant continued incarcerated. PSI Ordered Transcript Ordered. Control Date: 12/27/2024."

The case is US v. Callender, 23-cr-523 (Ho)
