After Man Charged With Killing 69 Year Old Woman with Machine Gun 2d Man Pleads Guilty

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Jan 29 – After a woman with a walker was killed in East Harlem, on September 4 Federal prosecutors announced, along with NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch, "the unsealing of a Complaint charging FAISIL McCANTS in connection with an August 27, 2025, armed robbery and shooting in which McCANTS fired 15 rounds from a machine gun on a public street, striking and killing a 69-year-old woman."

On September 5 McCants, still in jeans, was presented before U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Chief Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn. Inner City Press was there, the only media in the SDNY Mag Court.

McCants had three supporters in the gallery; the victim, it seemed, was not represented. With two Federal Defenders, McCants consented to detention, without prejudice to a later bail application.

On September 17 Inner City Press was in the SDNY Magistrates court when the co-defendant was brought in by Marshals, in shorts and a white T-shirt. His retained counsel consented to detention - then put on the record that despite him being a member of the SDNY for four decades [including in the recent US v. Sean Combs case] he had been asked to give up his umbrella upon entering, unlike the prosecutors.

On January 29, 2026 Cordero pled guilty to the lesser included charge of Count 2, with sentencing set for April 29.
