SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Jan 26 - In the U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of New York
a man charged with drug and
"ghost gun" offenses is
defending himself at trial.
On January
24, the trial proceeded before
Judge Lewis J. Liman, with
defendant Eric Lesane's
probation officer on the
witness stand being
cross-examined... by Lesane.
He ended each question with,
"Is that correct?" Sometimes
it was, and sometimes it
wasn't.
Judge
Vernon S. Broderick had the
case but, now presiding over
the death penalty trial of
Sayfullo Saipov, on January 6
he docketed an order that
trial would proceed before
Judge Liman, and that the
parties must proposed
redactions to the sealed
Docket Number 51 by January 9.
It was ordered unsealed on
January 10 - but the link is
still dead as of January 24.
On January
25, Lesane crosse examined the
government's narcotics expert
(did her tests reveal the
origin of the cannabis? No);
next up was ATF firearms
interstate nexus expert Eric
Dornbusch, who said he began
with DoD then the Chicago
anti-gang unit, Brooklyn arson
and explosives unit and now
Hudson Valley. The courtroom
had various exhibit boxes.
On January
26, Lesane was brought late
from the Essex County
Correctional Facility (with,
he said, another defendant on
trial in SDNY). He spoke for
himself at the charge
conference.
Judge Liman said he'd
told the jury they would have
the exhibits when they
deliberate - but that was
before he saw the guns and
drugs and cash. The AUSA said
a Marshal would have to be
present. Lesane said if the
jurors ask to the the physical
evidence, they should be
allowed. But should it be sent
in? Letters are due Monday at
9 am.
The
case is US v. Lesane,
22-cr-110 (Liman)
