SDNY COURTHOUSE,
March 1 –
Donald
Pegues is in
detention, for
escape from a
halfway house.
His underlying
sentence has
expired. But
now he's
jailed for
escape, while
needing a
heart
operation.
On March 1,
2023 U.S.
District Court
for the
Southern
District of
New York Judge
Paul A. Crotty
proceeding.
Inner City
Press was
there, the
only media in
the courtroom.
The halfway
house at issue
is the Bronx
Residential
Reentry Center
at 2534
Creston Avenue
in The Bronx.
Pegues
received a
weekend pass
to leave for
the weekend of
November 25,
2022. But
thereafter, he
had not
answered calls
and "wellness
checks" from
the Bronx RRC
staff.
Pegues'
Federal
Defender said
he would be
making a bail
application,
not today but
on March 7, to
get the heart
operation.
Judge Crotty
asked for
precedents by
then.
The
case is US v.
Pegues,
23-cr-86
(Crotty)
