Man Jailed on Rikers Since October Has Case Federalized Speedy Trial Opposition Denied

SDNY COURTHOUSE, April 1 – A man who had been detained on Riker's Island since October 2024 on gun charges was presented on April 1, 2025 before U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge Ona T. Wang. Inner City Press was there, the only media in the SDNY Mag court. 

 The Federal Defender consented to detention while saying he was ask for a bail hearing on or before Friday.

The assigned District Judge Colleen McMahon had set a first appearance a month out, on May 1.

 The AUSA asked the Speedy Trial Act time be excluded - and the Federal Defender opposed. 

  Judge Wang agreed to exclude time. 

 The case is USA v. Thompson, 1:25-cr-124 (McMahon / Wang
