Eric Adams Staffer Mohamed Bahi After Arrest for Obstruction Puts Up Staten Island House

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Nov 20 – NYC Mayor Eric Adams' chief liaison to the Muslim community Mohamed Bahi was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice and destruction of records in connection with alleged straw donors to Adams.

On October 8 he was presented before U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge Robert W. Lehrburger. Inner City Press live tweeted, thread:

[Bahi is brought out by US Marshals in an Under Armor shirt, is whispering with his lawyer.] All rise! Deputy: Presentment of Mohamed Bahi, 24 Magistrate 3535.

Judge: Mr. Bahi, you are charged with obstruction of justice and destruction of records in connection with alleged straw donations to a candidate for, uh, Mayor   Judge: You do have retained counsel for today. Have you reviewed the complaint?

Counsel: Yes. Judge: Because this is a complaint you have the right to a preliminary hearing.... We'll set a date in a bit. But now we are going to address if you can be released.

AUSA: We propose release on $250,000 bond co-signed by two financially responsible persons,... We are adjourned.

On October 18, Bahi got a new lawyer, from a DC-based firm, and asked until October 25 to meet the condition of the two co-signers, saying the parties "are engaged in continuing discussions regarding the two co-signers."

On October 30, Bahi's lawyer wrote in again: "Mr. Bahi submitted two co-signers that provided requested documents to the government and were interviewed during the week of October 16th. Given the financial resources of one of the two co-signers, the government asked whether a substitute cosigner could be utilized. Mr. Bahi thereafter provided an additional co-signer, and his interview took place on October 25. The government has requested additional documents from this cosigner, which the defense is working to obtain. As a result of the foregoing, we respectfully request an extension of time until November 8, 2024."

On November 4, Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn granted the request.

On November 20 Bahi's counsel said the bond will now be secured by his house on Staten Island. Magistrate Judge Aaron approved.

The case is US v. Bahi, 24-mj-3535 (Netburn)
