SDNY
COURTHOUSE,
Nov 26 –A man not arrested on
a Federal check kiting
complaint in 2022 was
presented on November 26, 2024
before U.S. District Court for
the Southern District of New
York Magistrate Judge Barbara
C. Moses. Inner City Press was
there, the only media in the
SDNY Mag court.
The
Assistant US Attorney sought
detention, emphasizing risk of
flight. He said the man was
arrested by state authorities
in a stolen car, using a fake
ID, and may have been in China
for some part of the period
between 2022 and his
arrest.
He said all
the other co-defendants had
pled guilty. But a check of
the docket finds that at least
one got a deferred prosecution
agreement - from none other
than Magistrate Judge Moses,
on February 5, 2024.
The
defense, seeking release, said
that the girlfriend would
sign, but had not been able to
make it to court. Ultimately
the defense reversed and
consented to detention, with
an eye to making a future
application for bail.
The overall
case is USA v. Zhang, et al.,
1:22-mj-8263 (Moses)
