Man Arrested with Gun and Crack on Stolen Scooter Was Offered Bail Now Reversed

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Oct 6 – A defendant with dozens of previous arrests, most recently for stolen scooper, crack and a gun in The Bronx, came before U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge Jennifer E. Willis on September 30. Inner City Press was there, the only media in the SDNY Mag Court:

AUSA: He was stopped at 3:45 am with a gun and vials of crack. At the precinct he said, I should have gone for it Judge: He may have meant, Should have run for it

AUSA: He has been arrested six times for resisting arrest. There was NYS menacing in the 2d degree, for pulling out a firearm while holding drugs.

AUSA: There's been d.v. - his ex girlfriend says he kicked in her door, left voice messages he would kill her and her daughter.

Federal Defender: The court in The Bronx released. He has what we used to call an addict's rap sheet. He wasn't reaching for the gun but rather his ID.

Federal Defender: The Bronx didn't bring charges for the domedtic violence, nor did the headbutting of a police officer - you should not consider either.

Judge: I'll take a break. [Meanwhile now here in Mag Court, 2 grand jury returns - 2 grand juries sitting? - and AUSA and officer for warrant review - jotting it all down

Judge: I do think there are conditions on which I will release you.

Judge: Yes there are many arrests [64] but they have not been charged as felonies. He was granted release - once the Federal Defenders can show an in-patient bed for him. It is not clear if that would be notated in the docket, which only became available on October 1.

On October 4, the Federal Defender opposed the US Attorney's Office's motion to the Part 1 Judge Jennifer L. Rochon for a stay, granted to 5 pm on October 6.

On October 6, Crowell was ordered detained, on danger to the community and risk of flight: "Minute Entry for proceedings held before Judge Jennifer L. Rochon: Bond Revocation Hearing as to David Crowell held on 10/6/2025. Detention: Risk of flight/danter." Inner City Press is following the case.

The case is USA v. Crowell, 1:25-mj-3022 (Willis)
