July 1 –
Mekhi McGowen
was indicted
for wire
fraud,
tricking a
victim into
making loans
using
another's
identity, the
prosecutors
say.
He
appeared in a
suit on August
14, 2023
before U.S.
District Court
for the
Southern
District of
New York
Magistrate
Judge
Katharine H.
Parker. Inner
City Press was
there, the
only media in
the SDNY Mag
Court.
McGowen
has already
been presented
and released
on $250,000
bond in
Florida; the
bond is
secured by a
property on SW
Colorado
Avenue, Port
St. Lucie,
Florida. In
SDNY he was
given a free /
taxpayer
funded Federal
Defender.
He
is in New York
for an
appearance
before the
District Judge
Jennifer H.
Rearden on
August 15 at
11:30 am. He
was
re-released
and told not
to have any
contact with
his
co-defendant
Shane McGregor
without the
presence of
counsel.
The
indictment
describes the
victim as "a
particular NYC
retirement
system" and
the
fraudulently
obtained loan
to have been
for $750,000.
It says they
used the names
of 30 members
of the
retirement
system,
without their
consent.
Inner
City Press
went on August
15. The victim
was named: the
NYC Board of
Education
Retirement
System. The
co-defendant
is a fugitive,
whose social
media was
cited.
He
was presented
and detained
on September
10, with a
conference set
for September
18. Then a
request by the
US Attorney's
Office to
delay it until
September 25.
Jump
cut to June 8,
2026, when
McGregor was
sentenced to
41 months in
prison with
Fort Dix
recommended,
and July 1,
with the US
Attorney's
Office
docketed a
proposed order
of restitution
of $1.3
million.
