SDNY COURT, Dec
10 –
Venezuelan indicted
narco-trafficker Carlos Orense
Azocar was presented in
Magistrates Court in the U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of New York
on June 23, 2023 and Inner
City Press was (the only
media) there.
Orense had
just been extradited in from
Italy and the indictment
against him unsealed.
The case was
wheeled out and assigned to
District Judge Vernon S.
Broderick.
On November 30,
more names on direct - and
3500 material on cross. Thread.
At trial's end,
the jury returned a guilty
verdict against CARLOS ORENSE
AZOCAR on all three counts in
the Indictment, which
contained cocaine-importation
and weapons charges.
On March 7, 2024
the US Attorney's Office
opposed Orense's motion for a
new trial, arguing (as they
are in US v. JOH) that their
cooperating witnesses are
dispositive.
Jump cut to May
27, 2025 with Orense still not
sentenced. The US Attorney's
Office wrote in pushing
sentencing to October 8,
citing both prosecutors having
a trial before Judge
Hellerstein starting June 30
and possibly running into
August: the Hugo "El Pollo"
Carvajal-Barrios trial...
Orense was found
guilty following a two-week
trial before U.S. District
Judge Vernon S. Broderick.
Inner City Press covered it
blow by blow:
When the trial
resumed on December 4 in the
afternoon, Inner City Press
was there. Thread.
On December 5,
another cooperator was on the
stand, this one in detention.
He testified about trafficking
cocaine from Maracaibo,
Venezuela to Europe and said
of a meeting, "Carlos [Orense]
was there.... He was fat, fat
all over, el Senor
Carlos. He spoke 15
minutes with Ramon Quintero
and Wilber Varela."
On December 6, a
pilot was on the stand about
flying cash for Carlos from
Mexico, thread
On December 7, after firearms
were shown to the jurors and
they left for the day, the
defense put on the stand a
proposed witness. It was
cooperator Arvelaiz' aunt. Thread

On September 5,
2025, sentencing was pushed
back again: "It is hereby
ORDERED that: Defendant shall
file objections to the
Presentence Report by
September 15, 2025, Probation
shall file the final PSR on
September 29, 2025 and the
sentencing in this matter
scheduled for October 8, 2025
at 10:00am is rescheduled to
October 29, 2025 at 10:00am.
(Signed by Judge Vernon S.
Broderick on 9/8/2025)
It was pushed to
December 10. On November 26
defense counsel wrote in
asking for the 40 year
minimum, noting that it still
means he will die jail (he has
appealed - and, on November 26
there was word of a pardon for
another Narco Drama defendant,
Honduras' JOH... It happened.
On December 8
Judge Broderick granted his
request to continue sentencing
as he seeks additional
lawyers, but still keeps a
conference on for December 10.
And at that
conference he set sentencing
for December 29: as to
Carlos Orense Azocar held on
12/10/2025. Defendant Carlos
Orense Azocar, in custody, the
sentencing is scheduled for
December 29, 2025 at 2:30 PM
Inner City Press
will continue to cover this.
The case is USA
v. Azocar, 1:21-cr-379
