UN GATE,
March 19 – How corrupt
is the UN system under Antonio
Guterres? Well, the day before
Guterres was set amid Gaza,
bombings and hostages to party
down with Sharon Stone and the
UN Correspondents Association
at Casa Cipriani, WIPO in
Geneva did the same. (A year
later on December 13, 2024,
the same sale of Guterres was
repeated).
The World
Intellectual Property
Organization under Director
General Daren Tang threw a
lavish party on December 14,
2023, Inner City Press
far-flung whistleblowing
sources told it, and it
exclusively reported.
On December 18, a
complaint was filed with Tang,
citing Inner City Press'
exclusive report: "Dear
Director General Daren Tang,
We write to you as WIPO
whistleblowers.... See article

On March
19, 2025, opposition to the
appointment of Beatriz
Amorim—a Brazilian national
and niece of President Lula’s
Chief Adviser, Celso Amorim—to
a Senior Director position
before the post was even
advertised. Evidence of this
prearranged appointment is
documented in a diplomatic
cable sent by Brazilian
Ambassador Guilherme Patriota
to Foreign Minister Mauro
Vieira. In response to
this blatant misconduct, a
growing group of WIPO
whistleblowers and concerned
current and former staff have
written to the Chair of WIPO's
General Assembly, Ambassador
Alfredo Suescum (Panama), and
the Vice-Chair and acting
Chair of WIPO's Coordination
Committee, Karan Thapar
(India), demanding Ms.
Amorim’s suspension:
Dear Ambassador
Suescum and Mr. Thapar, We,
the undersigned WIPO
whistleblowers and concerned
current and former staff, urge
your immediate intervention to
ensure that Ms. Beatriz Amorim
is suspended from duty pending
the outcome of an independent
external investigation into
her appointment as Senior
Director of the Department for
Development Coordination
within WIPO’s Regional and
National Development Sector
(RNDS), in accordance with
WIPO’s Staff Regulations and
Rules. Serious and credible
allegations of corruption,
recruitment fraud, and a
fraudulent competition have
been raised regarding Ms.
Amorim’s appointment.
Documentary evidence—including
a diplomatic cable from
Brazil’s Permanent
Representative to WIPO—
indicates that Director
General Daren Tang had
predetermined Ms. Amorim’s
selection months before the
competition was formally
announced. Despite these
concerns, Mr. Tang proceeded
with her appointment on 1
October 2024, demonstrating a
blatant disregard for
transparency, fairness, and
integrity in WIPO’s
recruitment process, as well
as the rights of candidates
who applied in good faith.
Additionally, it is important
to highlight that Ms. Amorim
is the niece of Celso Amorim,
the Chief Adviser to Brazilian
President Luiz Inácio Lula da
Silva. This connection raises
further concerns regarding
political interference and
favoritism in the recruitment
process. The appointment of
Ms. Amorim, given her familial
ties and the documented
irregularities in the
selection process, seriously
undermines WIPO’s credibility
and commitment to fair hiring
practices. Given that Mr. Tang
is directly implicated in
orchestrating this fraudulent
process, we cannot direct this
request to him. Instead, we
turn to you, as Chairs of
WIPO’s governing bodies,
