UN GATE,
Nov 23 – How corrupt is
today's UN under Antonio
Guterres? Today's follow up is
again on his mission in South
Sudan, UNMISS, about which his
spokespeople Stephane Dujarric
and Melissa Fleming refuse all
Press questions. Inner City
Press has asked them, and
others, about the newest sex
abuse case against the UN
there. Now this, from a UN
whistleblower sent to Inner
City Press:
Dear Mr. Matthew
Russell Lee:
The
Association of South Sudan
Contractors (ASSCO) has filed
a petition with Vice President
for Infrastructure Cluster,
Taban Deng Gai, alleging
exclusion from United Nations
Mission in South Sudan
(UNMISS) procurement
opportunities. The petition,
signed by Newton Crispo W.
Waniba, deputy head of ASSCO,
claims that UNMISS’
procurement practices
systematically block South
Sudanese companies, adversely
impacting local business
growth and hindering the
nation’s economic recovery.
The
majority Staff previously
complaint and
highlights past actions by
Stephaine Scheer, former
director of mission support,
alleging that Scheer routinely
awarded contracts to
appointees who would
uncritically support her
decisions, sidestepping
competitive and fair
processes. The staff
criticizing that certain
hiring managers within UNMISS
have acted as though managing
private enterprises,
prioritizing personal gains
over organizational ethics and
integrity.
Majority staff
points to alleged misconduct
involving Chris Fathers,
asserting that he collaborated
with Scheer to secure
high-value contracts for
favored contractors.
The call is for
independent investigators to
examine UNMISS’s operations,
especially given that the
current Special Representative
of the Secretary-General is
reportedly unable to address
these issues due to health
concerns.
It is
Guterres, they say, who should
resign - and end censorship.
